For Your Health and Fertility – Tips to Protect Yourself from Toxins (First Steps)

Are you concerned about exposure to toxic chemicals in your environment? Are you worried about the effects of using mobile phones and other wireless devices?

If you are trying to get pregnant you have probably been told to be careful about using cleaning products and to minimise your exposure to toxic chemicals, but it’s difficult to know where to start. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

Open your windows and air your home thoroughly every day

Our homes contain lots of potentially toxic substances. Chemicals from furnishings, paint, household cleaning and cosmetic products continually enter our atmosphere and build up in the air and dust around the house. Studies indicate that the air inside a double glazed home is 5 times more toxic than the air outside. So unless you live close to significant sources of pollution (or there’s a rare toxic fog outside!), it’s a very good idea to air your home daily. Bathrooms are particularly at risk of polluted air from chemicals in bathroom products and moulds (due to damp), so open the bathroom window when in use.

Wear protective gloves when cleaning or in contact with any chemicals

Toxic chemicals are easily absorbed through the skin. A simple rule: “if you wouldn’t put it in your mouth, don’t touch it!” Limit your use of cleaning products to those with natural ingredients.

Reduce your exposure to electromagnetic radiation by clearing your bedroom of wireless and electrical devices

Everything in the universe exists because of the balance of positive and negative forces and electromagnetic fields. Our health and biology depend on them. The problem is that man-made electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are much stronger than our own and thus can interfere with our physiology and health. Every electric socket, household appliance, computer and mobile phone generates an electromagnetic field (EMF). Gadgets such as lights and alarm clocks create only low frequency fields. But computers and wireless devices create high frequency fields. The stronger the field and the closer you are to it, the greater the effect it has on your body.

Most importantly do not use your mobile phone as an alarm or charge it at your bedside. Charge your phone up in the hall or kitchen. Remove all unnecessary electrical items from your bedroom and reposition those that remain to more than four feet from your bed. Unplug items such as hairdryers when not in use. Making these changes to your bedroom can make a big difference!

Don’t wear perfume

Most perfumes contain phthalates – toxic chemicals known to disrupt the function and balance of hormones in the body.

Reduce your use of cosmetics

Most cosmetics, especially lipsticks and kohl pencils, contain lead. Not because lead is added, but because they the pigments used to give them colour are mined from the ground and are naturally contaminated with traces of heavy metals including lead. Lead is neurotoxic and has adverse effects on the immune system and hormones, including sex hormones. If you are pregnant, do not wear lipstick. If you want to wear make-up you can reduce your exposure by wearing less make up, having some make-up free days at the weekends and taking your make-up off, ideally as soon as you get home from work, and before going to bed.

What clients say about Judy Bowen-Jones Acupuncture:

“I decided to have acupuncture after 6 months of trying for a baby to give myself the best chance at falling pregnant.  Judy was very knowledgeable on the phone and after my first consultation I knew I had made the right choice.  She discussed all areas of my life including nutrition, work and home life to be able to tailor her treatment to my needs, and was even able to suggest changes to my diet that I believe had a very positive effect in the long run.  I fell pregnant 4 months after my treatment began and believe the positive steps I took in that time including my acupuncture treatment and change in nutrition helped.  I continued to have acupuncture throughout my pregnancy as I felt it had a beneficial effect on me and kept some of my early anxieties at bay.  I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Judy and would go back if I ever needed treatment again.”
